THE LAST BEACH MOVIE
(2010)
This work is inspired by pop cultural mythology surrounding Brian Wilson (of the Beach Boys), the ethereal vocal
harmonies typical of his compositions, the all-encompassing emotive quality and romance of his pet subject
(the sea) and draws its title from an essay about Brian Wilson by rock journalist Nick Kent.
Voices, the sound of crashing waves and a miniature piano in a sandbox will create this sound environment.
Whilst composing, Wilson required an inspirational environment and this took the form of a sandbox set up
in his living room, with his piano inside it. For the installation, the toy piano will also be miked up and delayed.
The audience is encouraged to make sand castles, write messages in the sand and/or play the piano,
adding to the soundscape through their play.
